One
of the main contributors to our everyday stress is our workplace.
70% of workers surveyed by a national survey stated that their
job is very stressful. Stress is the #1 cause of disability.
It costs employers billions of dollars a year on lost productivity
and healthcare costs. Since the workplace is stressful, it
seems commonsense to provide some means of stress relief in
the workplace. More and more employers are recognizing that
a regular massage can reduce the physical and mental effects
of stress, thus reducing burnout and stress related diseases.

STUDIES:
Method:
An on-site chair massage therapy program was provided to reduce
anxiety levels of 18 employees in a downsizing organization.
15 control group Ss participated in break therapy. Subjects’
stress levels were measured with the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory,
which was administered twice during pretest, post test, and
delayed post test to achieve stable measures.
Results: Significant reductions in anxiety
levels were found for the massage group.
Shulman,
K.R. & Jones, G.E. (1996).
Method: Twenty-four adults with lower back
pain were randomly assigned to a massage therapy or a progressive
muscle relaxation group. Sessions were 30 minutes long twice
a week for five weeks. On the first and last day of the 5-week
study, participants completed questionnaires, provided a urine
sample and were assessed for range of motion.
Results: By the end of the study, the massage
therapy group, as compared to the relaxation group, reported
experiencing less pain, depression, anxiety and improved sleep.
They also showed improved trunk flexion, and their serotonin
and dopamine levels were higher.
